time for a new study

My current project "Time for a New Study" was elected to lauch for a 10 min. short. I was thrilled to see my project chosen , but got a bit nervous after everything settled in. I have a lot of history, information, and references for this specific topic. I am excited to start filming and interviewing. I have noticed not a lot has been done about this subject and I am honored to have a team beside me to help me capture this situation and potentially make something happen about it.

reaction to film 3-18-09

The film we watched in class on Wednesday was very informational on the media of homosexuals. I appreciated the examples as well as the interviews from what seemed like fellow gay and lesbian actors, directors, and authors. Forgive me if I am wrong I’m sure not all of them were, but a few gave off the impression that they were. I do believe that we have come a long way from black and white movies to now television shows that are based on only homosexuals. For example; Will and Grace is based on a gay man living with a straight woman and a “typical” gay friend(Jack) and a kooky friend Karen. In the documentary they were saying that they would only portray the typical “gay guy” as feminine and comedic as if it were a joke. Will and Grace shows us that the character of Will comes off as a straight man with his mannerisms and is gay.
We have made major motion films such as Brokeback Mountain that is a whole film based on a homosexual relationship. I was astonished to see that our culture today is more open than ever to two people of the same sex being together. This film was nominated and won several awards and the audience loved what they were watching.
I had no idea what happened in media before my day with the homosexuals, even though I don’t agree with it religiously. I believe if that is the way people want to live their lives let them if they find someone they love. No one can take the gift of love from anyone. I’m proud to be apart of a generation that is more accepting to topics that were looked down upon or made fun of in previous years.

women athletes

I was searching on youtube for topics I thought were interesting, and funny enough I found a documentary on the exact thing I wanted to shoot for our class. I have strong opinions on how women athletes are betrayed of course being one I have a lot to debate about. After going to Spain with the soccer team and playing three Women's semi-professional teams it's unfair of the a non existent respect men give women. We in the states are fortunate enough to have a lack of respect, but at least we are given some kind of respect. I believe the main reason men stayed to watch us play in Spain is to whistle and to check out athletic body types. Some of the comments made during the games were so juvenile and obscene. Hopefully there are people in our class that are willing to take this approach to our documentary project.

fc barcelona

FC Barcelona is professional futbol(soccer) team in Spain. I was lucky enough to have enjoyed watching one of their games from nose bleed seats. It's amazing how much money you must pay to get into the game. I saw FC Barcelona play Leon from France. It was amazing to see how big of a sport futbol is in Europe compared to the states, but I am lucky enough to play for a women's team in the states because men there laugh in disgust at women athletes. The next game Barcelona will be challenging is Málaga C.F. The game is scheduled for March 22, 2009.

documentary

Courting Condi was an independent documentary film that was presented at the Durango Film Festival that I had attended. It was my first time seeing a movie that wasn’t playing world wide. It was definitely an experience, it was good to see how other people make documentaries that aren’t hugely well known. Since our class will be making documentaries soon it was good to get different ideas on the topic. I think it would be fun to put a comedic twist on a documentary, but it must be done right and not just funny to a few but to the majority of people.
The film was about a man who was in love with Condoleezza Rice and went across country and every important movement that had happened in her lifetime; from her hometown to her first big job, to the white house and meeting very important people in her life on the way. I knew that she was secretary of state which is my opinion is the person who tells the President of the United States what to do or they ask the secretaries opinion on a matter and listen to their thoughts. I never realized how powerful of a woman she was and is. I got to know about her whereabouts when it came to where she came from, where she went, and where she is going. It’s amazing to always figure out so much about someone whom you barely know anything about.
This film was talked up to be so amazing, hilarious, and basically a documentary with a comedy spin. Personally, I thought there were only a few humorous parts and I consider myself to be a very sarcastic person with an erratic sense of humor. More than anything I believed it to be dull, slow, and entirely judgmental and bias. I learned a lot of good powerful points about Miss Price, this movie gave you one point of view about her and the beginning was very well thought out until it got to the end of the movie. It made you think these horrible thoughts about her that are bias.
Overall it wasn’t a terrible film there were good and bad just like any other movie. I just think if it weren’t so bias or dragged out forever it would have made for a better film. My favorite part was when he was receiving vocal lessons from a famous songwriter to try and win Condoleezza’s heart, I thought that was hilarious. I am glad I did experience this film, it taught me a lot and I did enjoy myself no matter my personal opinion of the movie. It was a great time and a great way to meet new people and see the community come together to show support of filmmakers that haven’t had their “big break” yet.

DFF

http://www.durangofilmfestival.com/
Tonight there is a showing of Courting Condi tonight at 9pm at the gaslight theatre. It is a free showing so people are expected to be there 30-40 minutes early. I will critique this documentary and get ideas for my digital video production class as well as media literacy class. Hopefully it will be very helpful in choosing what kind of documentary to write about and how different camera angles and story lines come across.

Bachelor

So the show the bachelor had it's finale yesterday Monday, March 2, 2009. The bachelor Jason Mesnick got down on one knee and proposed to Melissa Rycroft. She said yes and they proceeded to have a life together after the show wrapped. Us as the viewers thought everything worked out perfectly until we watched the after show. After the Final Rose aired right after the finale and Jason came on national television to break up with Melissa to her face and began to tell her he was still in love with the other girl (Molly Malaney). He just said how much things changed and the chemistry between him and Melissa wasn't there like it was on the show, but she was still a great girl. Melissa's reaction was similar to what I would have done. She was so emotionally upset she referred to calling him a bastard by ruining her one chance of getting proposed to. She wanted to be propose, get married, and spend the rest of her life with someone, even if it wasn't Jason. He ruined her dream by his proposal and basically taking it back.
